Buzek to be EPP candidate for EP presidency
Joseph Daul, the leader of the EPP Group, has announced that Mario Mauro will stand aside and allow Jerzy Buzek to run as the EPP candidate for the presidency of the European Parliament.
Mr Daul made the announcement after talks with Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian prime minister and leader of the People of Freedom party, to which Mr Mauro belongs.
Mr Buzek, of the Polish Civic Platform party, is now likely to be installed as the EPP candidate for the presidency of the Parliament. As such, he will participate in the European Voice and Campaign for Parliamentary Reform’s Presidential Debate, hosted in association with Burson-Marsteller, on Wednesday 8 July. Graham Watson, the Liberal candidate, is also due to take part.
